Introduction to Chemistry
"How do the electron arrangements on atoms change the chemical and physical properties of elements and compounds?"
Every year, more than 2000 wildfires happen in BC forests. In the past, the government of BC went on overdrive trying to protect the forests, using fireproofing methods which were very effective. This ended up causing an encroachment on grasslands as well as low-bush fill-in, so when a fire starts, it's extremely difficult to control.
One of the strategies used to control or prevent fires is to perform preventative, or prescribed, fires. This is a strategy that was learned from the indigenous populations, and finally has been used more recently as an attempt to keep the forests as healthy as they once were.

The fuel that is used to start these fires is highly flammable; in contrast, the materials used in firefighter clothing and protective gear are specially designed to resist fire. Knowing the properties of different substances helps us work with them safely, and make the best use of them.
