MUSICAL INSTRUMENT INQUIRY PROJECT
What is the Inquiry Process?
Through the inquiry process, we have the unique chance to pursue something about a certain topic that intrigues or inspires us.
You will figure out a question you want to answer, then you will look for resources, pick through them, create your piece and share what you have learned.
For example, take a look at our overarching question:
How can I create an African-Inspired Musical Instrument that Expresses & Transforms my Thoughts, Feelings and Beliefs about Myself, about African Culture and the World in General?
It is a pretty broad question. In your case, maybe you are curious about drums; maybe you want to figure out how to build a drum and express something of yourself on the patterns. Your question could be:
How can I build an Udu drum in a way that expresses my thoughts about myself and skateboarding, while also incorporating elements of African culture?
You must come up with your own question, though. Make it personalized!
Also, if you have an idea for a musical instrument that is not currently mainstream, why not pursue it and see if it works?
You can even name your own musical instrument! Wouldn't that be fun?

Remember...
There is no right or wrong with inquiry!
You can learn JUST AS MUCH when something goes wrong as when something goes right.
For starters, you will be deciding what musical instrument speaks to you, and what do you want to pursue on your inquiry process.
Follow these steps to define your instrument:
1. What kind of musical instrument is attractive to me – percussion, wind, string?
2. Do I want to make a large instrument or a small instrument?
3. What do I need to know in order to build my instrument?
4. How much clay will I need to use approximately?
5. Will I need forms, molds of any kind?
6. Do I have space on the body of my instrument, or a way to express African-inspired designs on my instrument?
7. What is it that I want to discover about the building process, about myself or the world around me?
The last question above is the beginning of your inquiry question.
