Le Salon

Direct translations are hidden between two pink { }. Watch out for these floating brackets! Simply drag your mouse over the brackets to highlight your translation!
All notes and explanations notes are in green.

On va examiner la fonction de chaque pièce d'une maison. {we will examine the function of each part of a house.}

Did you notice the word "on" above? Nowadays, "nous" is used mostly in formal writing. In regular speak you want to use "ON". It means "people". Like saying "everybody is going to the dance." So, "on" is conjugated as a single person -- just like Il or Elle.

Dans cette le
çon, on va chanter une chanson sur la fonction de chaque pièce de la maison. {In this lesson, we will sing a song about the function of each room of the house.}

Stop scrolling! Before you read the song below, try answering the questions on the sheet below. Make predictions about the function of each room! Once you are done, scroll down to see if you were right!

Chanton dans le salon!

Picture

Picture
{    Sing in the living room!

Chorus:
Let's all sing a song
about the rooms of a house.
What are we doing
in each room of a house?

In which room do we sleep?
In which room? In which room?
We sleep in the bedroom
When we are very tired!

In which room do we play?
In which room? In which room?
We play in the recreation room
and we watch the television!

Chorus

In which room do we eat?
In which room? In which room?
We eat in the dining room
We eat all day!

In which room do we cook?
In which room? In which room?
We cook in the kitchen
We prepare the sardine!

Chorus

In which room do we sing?
In which room? In which room?
We sing in the living room
and this is the end of our song!
}

Vérifiez vous prédictions et faites des corrections. {verify your predictions and make corrections.}

Now, go back to the illustrations on pages 6 - 7 (above). See all the alines doing different activities. Identify which illustration
goes with each action.

We will now sing the song several times until we got it really good, and then try to sing it without the voiceover!!! Just with instrumentals. :D

Maintenant, regardez les pages 6 et 7 de ton livre. Compl
étez le graphique. Écris le nom de chaque piece dans les cercles, par example, la cuisine.

É
cris le nom de l'activité correspondante dans les rectangles, par example, nous cuisinons. { Now, look at pages 6 and 7 of your book. Complete the graphic. Write the name of each room in the circles, for example, the kitchen. Write the name of the corresponding activity in the rectangles, for example, we cook.}

Complete the spidermap on the file below.

Let's read the lyrics one final time. What do you think NOUS refers to?

Qui est nous?

Regardez, quand on dit nous, le verbe se termine en "ons". { Look, when we say nous, the verb ends in "ons".}

That's the right way to conjugate the first person plural!

Now, for a special challenge -- let's check out the song Chez Moi!
Picture
{  At home

Sitting on a chair, dad reads his newspaper
In front of the TV, is my brother, Pascal,
Where are they? What a question!
They are in the recreation room.

A pie in the over, my sister is the cook,
I do the dishes with the help of my brother
Where are we? In the pool?
No, no, my friend. We are in the kitchen.

Chorus:
At home, the bedroom,
the living room, the kitchen, and the dining room
At home, the recreation room
the bathroom, the garage, the attic
At home, it's life, at home

I make beautiful dreams, nightmares forbidden
With my pillow, I'm going to bed
Where am I? Do you know?
I get dressed in my bedroom.

You brush your teeth, you comb yourself
You flush the toilet, and you gargle
Where are you? Toothpaste on your hand
In front of the mirror, you are in the bathroom.

Chorus

Mom is doing repairs, she is under the car
My grandma looks for the hammer
Where are they? Are they doing housework?
No, my friend. They are in the garage.

I put on the table, dinner is served
it's time for a meal, I eat with my family
Where are we? Can you guess?
Very well, my friend. We are in the dining room.

Chorus

The dust, the antiques
the boxes and old clothes, an old basket
Where are these objects so well hidden?
They are found in the attic.

Next to Lise, I drink tea
Behind the table, my cat is tired
Where are we in the house?
We are in the living room.

Chorus  }
