Thinking Thursdays
Thinking Thursdays offer opportunities for students to explore different topics, question their beliefs, share ideas and grow in their critical thinking, in a safe space.
During the past few Thinking Thursdays, we have been working on a Digital Citizenship workshop.
Digital citizenship and protection of privacy are extremely important topics for youth today.
You can go directly to the workshop by clicking here.
You can also download the workbook below.

The Socratic Method
One of the core activities during Thinking Thursdays revolves around the exploration of a topic through the Socratic Method.
It is based on philosophy and the idea that knowledge can be always expanded upon, until you come to a fuller understanding of any particular subject.
This helps your brain grow, and you can in effect, learn how to learn better!
The good news is, kids are NATURAL philosophers. They are the very best at asking questions and wondering!!!
Using the Socratic method will increase the probability that your ideas are TRUE, as well as give you confidence when you share your ideas.
It teaches you how to be as clear and thoughtful as possible with your ideas, considering it from all angles.
Some of your opinions are simply not strong or right, but how would you know without looking at them and questioning them yourself?

We discussed two topics today: the possibility of us living in the Matrix and if it is ever OK to break the law.
We considered what would happen if what is currently happening in the USA or other countries regarding their stance on immigration were to happen here in Canada. In both classes discussing this subject, conclusions turned out to be very similar, even though there was no one answer to the original question in the end of the day.

Discussions have been mostly successful, and students have been very engaged. Today, we had a particularly profound exploration on beliefs and why humans believe so many things that can't be proven. Most students from C4 participated thoughtfully, making this a very rich experience for everyone.
Big takeaways: It is part of the human condition to believe others are like us; things we believe about ourselves and others become our reality; everyone is able to change their minds if they allow themselves.

Today, we had a great time with the four divisions as they got comfortable with the exercise of finding the best truth, and recognizing how much we don't know as well as how much we failed to consider about any subject.
As the weeks progress, we will become more comfortable with this process, as well as become more efficient in finding the exception to every statement, so that we may find a better truth by the end.

C1 - "Should there be limitations to the right of free speech?"
C2: "What is the difference between justice and revenge?"
C3: "What is truth, and can truth change?"
C4: "Is "me" the same as "my brain", or do I have a soul?"
Now you know more about why we do Thinking Thursdays.
Below, an explanation of the Socratic method (it will seem familiar, ha ha) as well as a couple of fun videos about Philosophy!
