Portrait Study

Traditionally, a portrait is a painting, a drawing, illustration or a photograph of a person, depicting usually the head and shoulders; the background is soft, and all the attention is drawn towards the figure. Over the years, the notion of a photorealistic portrait has been enriched by other ideas, such as portraits with humour, abstract portraits, transformational portraits and other creative ideas.

For this advanced portrait unit, we will be creating a self-portrait with a twist. We will start by researching online unique ideas for portraits; then, we will sketch three ideas on your sketchbook that show a creative way to depict yourself. Be bold! Be nuts!

Remember to think of the overall design; how does the eye travel through the page? Does your drawing fill the page in an interesting way? The strength of your sketch will determine the strength of your final piece.

We will discuss your favourite idea and take a photograph to use as a source, matching your idea. We will use techniques used by actual portrait painters; for instance, if you want to make a painting of you eating a giant burger, you will bring a giant burger or something that can take its place, and we will photograph you on that position.

If your idea requires face painting, I have purchased some great face painting for this purpose.

Your super fun final work should be on acrylic and canvas, but if you feel inclined towards working with a different media, please talk to me about it; we're flexible.
